I teach students what good communication is by example. That is by explicitly modeling good communication and accompanying that modeling with an explanation of the key principles involved. For example, I'll model the art of good written communication by selecting a salient example of poorly written material from the students team report and suggesting a possible rewrite of that example, pointing out the relevant principles involved in the improved version, such as succinctness, the use of more precise wording, the removal of ambiguity or the need to have the text match the knowledge level and interests of the intended audience.
